1. Burlington, Vermont

Burlington Vermont has something for everyone, especially in the fall months. If you are lucky enough to live close to this amazing New England City in Vermont, the drive itself is worth the price of admission. In the middle of October, the leaves start to change which makes Northern Vermont look like a different planet.

Some things to do in Burlington include checking out the Burlington farmers market, drinking at one of the many breweries in town, hike some of the mountains nearby, go apple picking, and seeing the world famous Ben & Jerry’s factory. There are also some great affordable places to stay in Burlington including the Green Mountain Suites Hotel, the Anchorage Inn, and if you want to spend a little bit more for an amazing view – The Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain which sits right on beautiful Lake Champlain.

2. Asheville, North Carolina

The city of Asheville may not be as well known as the other cities on this list, but this vibrant city located in the Blue Ridge Mountain region is a must visit in October. Other than the beautiful views that you get in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, there are a lot of activities that you can do for cheap in Asheville. Some of the activities you can find here include visiting the historic Biltmore Estates, ziplining at the adventure center of Asheville, tasting the many craft beers, and enjoying the delicious barbeque.

There are also some amazing places to stay in Asheville that won’t cost you too much. My recommendations include the Brookstone Lodge, Cascades Mountain Resort, and the Beaucather – A boutique hotel.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

If you are looking for a destination that is both historic and a lively nightlife scene then New Orleans is the perfect option. There is a lot to do in the Big Easy that won’t cost you all that much to do. Some things New Orleans has to offer includes their Oktoberfest celebration, which at Deutches Haus on October 7-8, 14-15, and 21-22, a truly spooky Halloween celebration, delicious creole food, as well as some amazing shows.

On top of many things to enjoy in October, New Orleans also has some of the coolest looking hotels that are pretty cheap to stay at. Some of those hotels include the Astor Crowne Plaza New Orleans French Quarter, the French Market Inn, and Cambria Hotel New Orleans Downtown.

4. Savannah, Georgia

As soon as you step foot into Savannah, Georgia you feel like you have been magically transported to a different era in time. The historic city gives off an old timey feel with its horse-drawn carriages, cobblestone streets, and beautiful parks filled with large oak trees. If you do decide to travel to Savannah in October, you are in luck because it is one of their busiest months as far as their activity calendar goes. Some events you can find in October include ghost tours around the city, an Oktoberfest celebration on River Street, and their Greek Festival!

After a long day of experiencing everything Savannah has to offer, you are going to need a comfortable yet affordable hotel room to go back to. My top options for affordable hotels in Savannah are The Insetta Inn, The Grant Hotel, and if you want to be right in the middle of the action – River Street Inn.

The weather in Lisbon in October is absolutely perfect for taking a stroll through the the stunning city. The city of Lisbon has all of the beauty and charm of a European city, but doesn’t have the expensive price tag to go with it. Also, you can find fairly cheap direct flights from US major cities thanks to the TAP Portugal airline. There are many things to do for travelers in October such as enjoying the nightlife the city has to offer, taking a tour through the city on a “tuk tuk”, sampling some delicious sangria, and lounging at one of their few beaches on the coastline.

There are also some great affordable options when it comes to lodging in Lisbon including Hotel White Lisboa, Lisbon Marriott Hotel, Melia Lisboa Oriente.

3. Aruba

Looking for a tropical beach vacation this October but don’t want to overspend on flights and hotels? Then Aruba is absolutely for you. While there are some higher end hotels and resorts in Aruba, there are also some great affordable options for you and your travel crew. Aruba has the perfect mix of beautiful beaches, great excursions, and delicious restaurants.

Whether you decide you want to stay in the high rise district where all the resorts are on Palm beach, or stay over in the low rise district on Eagle Beach there are some great affordable hotels to stay at. In the High rise district, my favorite affordable option is the Holiday Inn Resort Aruba. The Holiday Inn is right smack in the middle of Palm Beach and is also close to the town where the restaurants are. My best affordable pick on Eagle Beach is the Eagle Aruba Resort and Casino.

4. Split, Croatia

While the weather in Split in October is not ideal for those people that love the beach, it is great for people that are looking to score a great deal in a beautiful destination that might otherwise be too expensive. This beautiful city on the eastern shore of Croatia has a lot to offer travelers that want to explore the historic city. Some things to do around Split include visiting the many gorgeous palaces and cathedrals, climb the marjan hill to get some amazing views of the city, and and enjoying the amazing wine at one of the wineries and wine bars around town.

In October the prices for some of the top hotels are hard to beat. My top hotels in the city are the Heritage hotel Santa Lucia, Boutique Hotel Luxe, and the Malena Palace.

October is a great time to take advantage of some of the top destinations in both the United States and across the globe. Whether you enjoy exploring a city you have never been to or just relaxing on a beach, these are some great options that you need to look into!
